The “Data Wizards” of Kaggle
Kaggle, an online platform that hosts data competitions, enables companies to utilize top data scientists to address specific issues. Software Advice, a website that compares business intelligence software, wanted to learn more about these “data wizards,” so analyst David Fried researched the top 100 Kaggle performers (as of October 15, 2013).
Below are his top findings:
- Of the top 100 prize-winning users on Kaggle, over 80 percent have a Master’s degree or higher. Thirty-five percent of the top 100 have a Ph.D.
- Interestingly, there was a wide range of areas studied among the top performers. Besides the expected computer science and mathematics programs, areas of study ranged from economics, to philosophy, to even law.
- The top performers also hail from all over the globe, with 29 countries represented in the top 100 users group. The top countries represented are the United States, Russia, and India.
- The number of contests a user entered also correlated to a higher chance at winning competitions and becoming a member of the top Kaggle prize-winners, suggesting that practice, indeed, makes perfect.
