PREFACE: By Ted O’Brien:
Many graduates of Masters or Ph.D programs relevant to becoming a Data Scientist can often find themselves caught in a “chicken or the egg” situation for that first job in the private sector because they lack “real world” experience and/or domain experience. While the situation is improving as hiring managers get a better feel for what they REALLY need vs. the IDEA of what they need, it still can be a perplexing and frustrating problem.
I’ve asked many hiring managers of Data Scientists, and aside from a direct recommendation from an employee at the firm, they love to see examples of original work to prove what you can do the job. Work that can be shared on blogs, Github, etc. Kaggle competitions and the like are great too.
However, this route below is also VERY compelling for Ph.Ds or Post Docs Researchers given who will be training you and the fact that you’re nearly guaranteed a job as a Data Scientist coming out of it. Note, I have no affiliation to this program, but it’s among the best I’ve seen. Take a look.

Insight is an intensive, six week postdoctoral training fellowship that bridges the gap between academia and a career in data science. Based in Silicon Valley, the program enables scientists to learn the industry specific skills needed to work in the growing field of big data at leading technology companies.
Are you a PhD candidate or postdoctoral researcher looking to transition into a career in industry? Do you want a career that truly leverages your quantitative experience in a fast-growing, in-demand field that is making a positive impact in the world?
Silicon Valley technology companies are hiring data scientists to help them glean insights from the terabytes of data that they collect everyday. While the amount of data produced and stored is growing exponentially, there is a severe shortage of top talent to analyze this data and extract valuable insights from it.
The Insight Data Science Fellows Program is a new postdoctoral training fellowship that bridges the gap between academia and data science. Insight is a six week, intensive program based in Mountain View, California that teaches researchers how to apply their existing analytical skills to big data.
The program consists of project-based, industry-driven learning approach designed to train you in many of the cutting edge data science tools and practices used in industry. Immediately following the program, Fellows interview at top Silicon Valley
technology companies and are likely to receive multiple job offers.
The Big Question:
Will I get hired after completing Insight? Yes. We aim for approximately one hiring company for each Fellow. You will effectively be walked into interviews with a half dozen companies – all of whom are extremely interested in hiring data scientists. Of the 18 Insight Fellows who completed the full job search in 2012, all 18 were hired as data scientists
